Nourishing Exfoliating Face Mask

It is always good to give your skin a fresh start. I like to use face masks on a weekly basis. Wearing makeup, sweating daily and exposure to pollutants in the air on a regular basis are great reasons to use a mask. Washing the face is wonderful but does little for deeply cleansing the pores. The following are my own recipes for a cleansing yet nourishing facial mask for all skin types.

Nourishing Exfoliating Face Mask


(Option #1)  Ingredients For Oily Skin
2 strawberries or 3 tablespoons strawberry puree
1 tablespoon of corn meal
3 tablespoons of green french clay
1 tablespoon of raw honey
1 teaspoon of pomegranate seed oil
1 tablespoon of greek yogurt (plain)

(Option #2)  Ingredients For Dry & Normal Skin Types
2 strawberries or 3 tablespoons strawberry puree
1 tablespoon of corn meal
3 tablespoons of rhassoul clay
1 tablespoon of raw honey
1 teaspoon of pomegranate seed oil
1 tablespoon of greek yogurt (plain)

Supplies
1 bowl
1 fork

 

Details about the ingredients

Yogurt is very nourishing for the skin. It contains zinc and lactic acid. They are great for removing old skin cells, hydration, shrinking the size of the pores and it leaves the skin with a beautiful glow.

Strawberries contain salicylic acid, vitamin C and folic acid. It fights free radicals that rob the skin of oxygen, is anti-aging, natural exfoliate, boost elasticity of the skin and increases collagen production. Strawberries also fights acne by deterring the skin from being oily.

Green French Clay is a very absorptive deeply cleansing clay that is essential for those with oily skin. It removes impurities and oils from the pores. Do not use this clay if you do not have oily skin. 

Rhassoul Clay is the most softening clay I've used. It is very rich in minerals such as silica, calcium, iron and potassium (just to name a few). It conditions the skin beautifully.

Raw Honey has antibacterial properties. It is a great mild cleanser and moisturizer.

Pomegranate Seed Oil is one of the best oils that can be used for the skin. It contains punicic acid. This is a strong omega 5 fatty acid that is vital for anti-inflammation. It is wonderful for all skin types, softens the skin, anti-aging and promotes increased circulation. All of these properties are why it is highly sought after for skin care.

Cornmeal is being used to exfoliate the skin in this recipe. You can use whatever ingredient you prefer for exfoliation (ex: sugar).

 

How to make the mask

  • Smash the strawberries with a fork. No need to chop it up. Just mash it up very well into mush in a bowl. If the strawberry puree is used just add it to a bowl.
  • Add the honey, clay, cornmeal, pomegranate oil and yogurt to the bowl. Blend until it is a paste consistency. 
  • Cleanse your skin with a gentle cleanser.
  • Apply the mask to your dampened face and neck. Be sure to avoid the area around your eyes. 
  • Massage the face and neck area lightly with the pads of your fingertips.
  • Leave the mask on for approximately 10 mins. This will allow it to penetrate into the skin. 
  • Massage your face and neck with water dampened fingers for approximately a minute.
  • Rinse well and follow up with the moisturizer of choice.

*This mask is wonderful for all skin types. If you have very sensitive skin you can exclude the usw of strawberries completely and add 1 or 2 tablespoons of distilled water to the mixture (until the has a paste consistency).
